Description
Pneumo 23 is a polysaccharide vaccine that protects against infections caused by 23 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is primarily used to prevent pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia in high-risk populations.
Target Diseases
- Pneumococcal Pneumonia Pneumococcal Meningitis Pneumococcal Bacteremia Other invasive pneumococcal diseases caused by the included serotypes.
Dosage Schedule
Single dose for most individuals. A second dose may be considered for high-risk individuals after 5 years, based on clinical recommendations.

Contraindications
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of pneumococcal vaccine or its components. Not recommended for children under 2 years due to reduced immunogenicity in this age group.
Additional Information
- Pneumo 23 is effective in reducing the burden of invasive pneumococcal diseases
- especially in older adults and those with chronic illnesses. It is different from conjugate pneumococcal vaccines like PCV13
- as it does not induce a strong immune memory response
- making it less effective in young children. Recommended as part of the vaccination strategy for high-risk groups in conjunction with other pneumococcal vaccines.
Storage Requirements
- Store at 2°C–8°C (36°F–46°F). Do not freeze. Protect from light.
