US institutions enforce immunisation requirements strictly, and incomplete paperwork delays enrolment.
The infectious risk itself is relatively low compared with tropical destinations, but a handful of things matter: seasonal influenza is significant, measles outbreaks recur in under-vaccinated communities, and meningococcal disease is a specific concern in university dormitories.

What to arrange before you travel
- Most US universities require documented MMR and varicella immunity, and many require MenACWY for students in residence halls.
- TB screening is commonly required, and an IGRA such as QuantiFERON is usually specified because BCG makes the skin test unreliable for Indian applicants.
- Hepatitis B vaccination is required for many healthcare and laboratory programmes.
- Get an annual influenza vaccine after arrival, since the US season runs opposite to much of India.
- Start this at least two months before departure, because a negative titre means vaccinating and then retesting.
Frequently asked questions
What vaccines do US universities require from Indian students?
Typically documented MMR and varicella immunity, hepatitis B for health science programmes, MenACWY for students in residence halls, and TB screening. Requirements vary by institution, so check your specific university.
Why do US universities ask for a QuantiFERON test rather than a skin test?
Because almost all Indian applicants received BCG at birth, which causes false positives on the tuberculin skin test. QuantiFERON uses antigens absent from BCG, so the result is interpretable.
How early should I start the vaccination paperwork?
At least two months before departure. If a titre test comes back negative you will need vaccination and possibly repeat testing, and hepatitis B alone runs over six months on a standard schedule.
Are there tropical disease risks in the United States?
Very limited. West Nile virus is seasonal in summer and there is no vaccine, but the dominant risks are respiratory infections and norovirus rather than tropical disease.
