Drug Panel Testing
Screening panels for employment, visa and institutional requirements, handled discreetly and reported in the format the requesting body expects.
Drug panel tests are ordered by an employer, an immigration authority or an institution, not usually by the person taking them. The requirement comes with a specification: which substances, which sample type, and what the report must show.
Getting that specification right at the start matters more than anything else on this page. A panel that omits a substance the requesting body asked for means repeating the test, and repeating it usually means missing a deadline.
At a glance
Panel sizes vary by requester. Confirm which one you have been asked for.
| Vaccine or test | Status | Schedule | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-panel screen | Conditional | Single sample | The most common baseline for general employment screening. Covers the substance groups most frequently specified. Which five varies slightly between providers and requesters. |
| 10-panel screen | Conditional | Single sample | Broader coverage, commonly requested for safety-critical roles, transport, healthcare positions and some visa categories. |
| 12-panel and extended screens | Conditional | Single sample | Used where a requester specifies additional substances beyond the standard groups. Only worth doing if it has actually been asked for. |
| Confirmatory testing | Conditional | Follows a non-negative screen | Screening tests are designed to be sensitive, which means they occasionally flag something that a more specific method does not confirm. A non-negative screen is not a result on its own, and confirmatory testing is what settles it. |
Screening and confirmation are different things
This distinction causes more distress than anything else in drug testing, and it is worth understanding before you take the test rather than after.
A screening test is deliberately tuned to be sensitive, so it rarely misses anything. The trade-off is that it sometimes flags a sample that a more specific confirmatory method subsequently clears. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, and occasionally particular foods, are known to interact with screening assays.
A non-negative screen therefore means the sample needs confirmatory testing, not that a substance has been established. Any requester who understands testing knows this.
Declare your medications beforehand
Tell us what you take before the sample is collected, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements. Several common medications are known to affect screening results, and having that recorded in advance means an unexpected screen result can be interpreted properly instead of investigated from scratch.
This is a practical step, not an admission of anything. It protects you.
What to bring
The single most useful thing is the requirement document itself.
- The letter, form or email from the employer, university or immigration authority stating exactly which panel is required.
- Photo identification, since these reports are identity-linked and the requester will expect that.
- A list of current medications and supplements.
- Any deadline you are working to, so we can tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
On privacy
Results go to you and to whoever you have authorised, and nobody else. If a report is to be sent directly to an employer or an immigration authority, that happens because you have asked for it in writing.
People are often uneasy about this test in a way they are not about a cholesterol check. It is a routine administrative requirement, we treat it as one, and there is no judgement involved at any point.
Frequently asked questions
Which drug panel do I need?
Whichever your employer, university or immigration authority has specified. Panels range from 5 to 12 or more substances, and requirements differ. Bring the requirement letter so the correct panel is run the first time.
What does a non-negative screening result mean?
That the sample needs confirmatory testing, not that a substance has been established. Screening tests are deliberately sensitive and can flag samples that a more specific method subsequently clears, including because of certain medications.
Can my medication affect the result?
Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines are known to interact with screening assays. Declare everything you take before the sample is collected so any result can be interpreted correctly rather than investigated from scratch.
Who receives my results?
You, and anyone you have authorised in writing. If a report needs to go directly to an employer or immigration authority, that only happens at your written request.
How long does it take?
Screening turnaround is usually short; confirmatory testing, if needed, adds time. Tell us your deadline when booking and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
Book a drug panel test
Bring the requirement letter from whoever asked for the test, along with photo ID and a list of your medications. That is what gets it done correctly the first time.
Before you rely on this page
This page is general health information, not personal medical advice. Vaccine schedules depend on your age, medical history, pregnancy status, medications and previous immunisations. Our doctors will confirm what is right for you at your appointment. National recommendations are also revised periodically. We review these pages against current Indian and WHO guidance.
